Workforce Development Tool - The Labour Crisis

A new Workforce Planning and Development Tool for primary industry businesses

The Commonwealth Government has provided funding to the Council to develop tools for primary industry businesses to help with finding and keeping labour. The attached pdf sets out the basic steps all businesses will need to consider when looking for people, especially skilled people. It also lists some key contact people who can help with recruitment and retention including migration contacts.

Workforce development is a broad concept that aims to improve entire industry workforces by an assortment of strategies and techniques including population, migration, regional development, health and retirement, industrial and human resource and specific training policies.

Workforce development includes:

  • plan - workforce planning
  • attract - attracting people to the industry
  • recruit - source, screen, select, induct
  • manage - personnel management
  • develop - training and experience
  • retain - work retention strategies
  • return - re-engaging older workers
 

Skilled Migration

Australia has traditional relied on skilled migrants to fill gaps in the workforce required for our economic development. There are currently gaps in some primary industry workforces that may limit the productivity of those sectors.
