New Personal Learning Plan magazine distributed to all Year 10 students.

equipdThe Primary Industry Skills Council has contributed to the new eQuipd magazine which was distributed to all schools in May 2011.

eQUIPD is a personal interactive handbook to assist all Year 10 students with their Personal Learning Plan.

This new annual magazine has been produced by Tracy Marsh Publications for all Year 10 students, parents and teachers.

eQUIPD  will be a valuable tool, when used actively by teachers in the classroom when working on the Personal Learning Plan.

Each school was provided with enough free copies of eQUIPD for every Year 10 student and their teachers.

With a youth magazine style and fresh look, eQUIPD is designed to appeal to the Gen Z students to help them plan for their future by helping to identify possible career choices, make decisions about the subjects they will study in Years 11 and 12, VET courses, possible tertiary training, and help them to identify their goals.

eQUIPD is full of quizzes, interactive pages and career profiles on most of the top careers available in SA.

eQUIPD is a complete reference tool where we have done the hard work for the students and created a one stop shop for study options, career pathways and finding their best fit.

Through interactive quizzes and practical exercises, eQUIPD helps them determine their likes, dislikes, strengths and limitations so that they can reach a greater understanding of their personality and skills traits. For each profession the magazine showcases subject choices, skills required and personalities best suited to that working environment; while offering practical exercises, work experience options and identifying further training options. The magazine will give online links for further investigating, phone applications and twitter blogs.

Seasonal Workers for the Horticulture Industry

The Australian Government previously conducted a pilot program for Pacific Seasonal Workers to work in the Australian Horticulture Industry.  Following this pilot the Government has decided to further implement the program to provide short term seasonal labour for the Horticultural Industry where local labour supply cannot be sourced.

Memoranda of Understanding have been signed between the Australian Government and four participating Pacific Island countries; the Republic of Kiribati, the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Vanuatu.

If you are a Grower or Horticulture Enterprise who is interested in having Pacific seasonal workers placed on my property by an Approved Employer, are interested in becoming an Approved Employer and wish to recruit Pacific seasonal workers to work on my own property, or place workers with other horticultural enterprises or growers or are simply interested in finding out more about Pacific Seasonal workers please visit the DEEWR website.

Skills Occupations List

The Skills Council recently responded to the review of the Skills Occupations List.  This list is used to source skilled migrant labour to meet current and long term skill shortages.  Skills Australia who are conducting the review submitted a draft list of skilled occupations with very few relevant to the primary industries sector.  The Skills Council has provided a written submission to Skills Australia recommending that the list be broadened to include a wide range of high demand, high value occupations that are in shortage accross the industry.  To view the submission which outlines the comments and recommendations click here.

Workforce Innovation Program

Wednesday, 23 June 2010 14:23

In 2010/2011 the Skills Council undertook a Workforce Innovation Program with funding support from the Commonwealth Government (DEEWR). The Program sought to establish local industry driven Action teams to deal with the labour and workforce development issues affecting much of the industry especially in regional areas. Four regions were involved with the Program and valuable work was undertaken in establishing longer term local management arrangements.  The Skills Council will continue to support these and other local management action groups and assist all regions to secure the skills and labour they need.

Primary Industries VET in SACE

Wednesday, 23 June 2010 14:26

For the first time the new South Australian (secondary school) Certificate of Education (SACE) has a defined primary industry program that students in Years 11 and 12 can undertake as part of their SACE studies. This means that from this year there are now real options for students who are interested in working in the primary industry sector.

A number of "focus schools" will be responsible for managing the program in conjunction with other secondary schools. The opportunity is there for students to undertake their Certificate II and part of their Certificate III whilst still at school. The program offers real programmed work experiences where students can develop practical skills as part of their studies. The VET in SACE Primary Industries Program offers a wide range of options for students in different industry fields.

Productivity Places Program for Existing Workers

DFEEST have announced another round of funding under the Productivity Places Program. A total of $32 million has been made available of which the Primary Industry Sector has been notionally allocated 6%.

The Program provides employers, industry sector bodies, Group Training organisations, RTO’s and a range of other bodies with an opportunity to identify upskilling needs and secure funds to meet those skill needs. The Program Round opened on the 15 June and closes on the 9th July.

Funding is available for Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications. Those wishing to secure funds to upskill existing workers will need to contribute 10% of the costs. The Program presents a real opportunity for primary industry enterprises to train their staff in areas of skill need.

DFEEST have provided the following documents to guide applicants intending to apply for funding:

The Skills Council received funding to conduct an innovative assessment project looking at ways RTO's can work more effectively with enterprises and share the assessment and delivery load. At the core of the project was valuing the role that each enterprise plays in training and assessing employees and building reliable mechanisms for assessment between the RTO's and enterprises.  Click here to review a copy of the final report.
